Tatya Tope

 

1-Born 1814, Yeola, Nashik, Maharashtra. He was the only son of Pandurang Rao Tope and his wife Rukhmabai.

2-Ramachandra Pandurang Tope was an Indian leader in the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and one of its notable generals.

3- He is better known by his nickname Tatya Tope, which is also transliterated as Tantya Tope or Tantia Topi.

4- He was a personal adherent of Nana Sahib of Bithur.

5- Ramachandra Pandurang Tope progressed with the Gwalior contingent after the British reoccupied Kanpur and forced General Windham to retreat from the city.

6- Afterwards he came to the relief of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi and with her seized the city of Gwalior.

7- In 1851, when James Andrew Broun-Ramsay, 1st Marquess of Dalhousie deprived Nana Sahib of his father’s pension, Tatya Tope also became a sworn enemy of the British

8-Tatya Tope was defeated by General Napier’s British Indian troops at Ranod .

9- After a further defeat at Sikar abandoned the campaign, he was executed by the British Government at Shivpuri on 18 April 1859.
He was hanged on April 18, 1859, in General Meade’s camp at Shivpuri.

10-Tantia Tope was an intimate friend and the right hand of Nana Sahib, the adopted son of Peshwa

11-In May 1857, Tantia Tope won the battle over the Indian troops of the East India Company at Kanpur. He was the Indian leader in the Rebellion of 1857.

12-He was known for his guerilla tactics, which scared the British.

13-He forced General Windham to retreat from the city of Gwalior.

14- Tantia Tope fought 150 battles against the British during his life span and demolished 10,000 British soldiers.

15-He collaborated with Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi to seize Gwalior.

16-Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi was Tantia’s childhood playmate. He cremated her body and performed the last rites when she was killed by a sword.
