1-Eratosthenes (276 – 194 B.C): He was a Greek poet, mathematician.

2-Herodotus: A Greek historian, who is known as the ‘Father of history.’ Herodotus explained the deposition of silt in the Nile delta.

3-Ptolemy: He belongs to 2nd century A.D. He wrote the book ‘Geography’ and he described the system of latitudes and longitudes. Ptolemy evolved the science of map-making and he was a cartographer as well.

4-Aristotle: He belongs in the period of (384 – 322 B.C.). He is a Greek philosopher who explained the eclipses.

5-Hipparchus (190 – 120 B.C.): He was perhaps the greatest of the Greek astronomers

6-Pythagoras: He was a great Greek philosopher and mathematician. He was the first to say that the Earth is spherical and revolves around the sun.

7-Vidal de la Blache advocated the opposite theory of determinism.

8-Baron Alexander Von Humboldt (1769-1859): He was a German naturalist and explorer. He moulded the substance of geography into a scientific form. Charles Darwin described him as the greatest scientific traveler that ever lived.

9-Bernhardus Varenius (1622-1650) wrote Geographia Generalis, the most highly regarded treatise on geography.

10-Glaciology is concerned with the study of glaciers.

11-Climatology: This studies the causes and distribution of temperature and winds, rainfall and runoff weather, and climate.

12-Baron Alexander Von Humboldt, a German naturalist, and explorer invented the isotherms to compare temperatures

13-Pedology is the study of soil science

14-Biogeography: This studies the distribution of flora (plant) and fauna (animal) in different parts of the world.

15-Paleography: It studies the distribution of land and sea through successive geological times. It is also the study of physical geography in the past geological ages.

16-Anthrogeography: It explores the distribution of human communities on the Earth in contents of their geographical environment

17-Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) plays an important role in the study of geographic problems.

18-Huntington is noted for describing the effects of climate on human life

19-Ratzel’s work was based on the concept of Physical environment controlled human activities

20- Herodotus was the first to divide the world landmass into three continents: Europe, Asia, and Libya (Africa).
